As they say, change is good. So- in addition to your old favorites- we've got a few new designers at Covet LA this season to mix things up. Here's a preview:

Whitney Pozgay has fashion in her genes. She began her career with aunt Kate Spade at Kate Spade New York, while honing her skills at Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2007, Whitney became lead women's wear designer at Steven Alan where she also spearheaded and designed women's collaborations including Steven Alan for Uniqlo and Urban Outfitters’ brand Lark and Wolff. She launched WHIT for the fall 2010 season with partners Zonda Sochorow, Zach Cooper and Parker Argote.

Hi!

I hate packing for multiple climates...

Four things: 1) Layers- this way you can take garments on or off to adjust for the temperature changes rather than pack three entirely separate wardrobes; 2) Black is your best friend- pack lots of black things in different textures so they can all be worn together. Black goes with everything, is flattering, chic, and doesn't get dirty quickly; 3) Less is more- only bring items that are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the circumstances; 4) Accessories are the key to making plain clothes look exciting and accessories allow you to wear the same "outfit" multiple times and always appear different. And in fall/winter, always bring one pair of flats, one pair of heels (unless there's nothing you're getting dressed up for) and one pair of boots.

The good news is that you are going to the epicenter of fast fashion, so if you're missing something, you can easily find it there. I'd also suggest (if you can) bringing one or two of your favorite blouses that you can have re-made in China (you can pick out fabrics and have a customized version "knocked off" quickly). I also find it helpful before a big trip like this to try on lots of outfits and note down some of your favorite combinations. You can even photograph them. That way, getting dressed in the morning won't be a stressful process.

I just found your amazing blog site and read about your admiration for the designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary at a boutique hotel in Paris, the Hotel Keppler. I just fell in love with the interior decor! You may already know that this hotel was designed by Mr. Rochon.

I would love to try to recreate some of the rooms of Hotel Keppler into my Los Angeles home. Do you happen to know where I might purchase some of the accessories the designer used in the hotel lobbies? I realize Mr. Rochon may have custom designed many of the furniture himself, however, I would really really appreciate any direction you might have for me.

I have been trying to get some response from his Chicago base firm but to no avail (no surprises there). I am really desperate!

What a lovely email to receive!

I personally have no formal interior design background (just fashion), but grew up with a design-obsessed mother and have long been a collector of furniture and home accessories. So unfortunately, I can't really help you! I would suggest, though, reading some blogs and scouring the internet and stores, flea markets, etc. The photos I used for that post are (for the most part) things that I own in my home. My guess is that much (if not all) of what is used in his hotels are one-of-a-kind antique pieces and items specifically created by him for use by the hotel only. But I'm sure you can find some similar things!

Hopefully you took some good pictures of the hotel while you were there. We live in a city that has incredible interior design resources, so I'm sure if you go to some shops (like on La Cienega), they could help point you in the right direction. Manufacturers like World's Away or Oly Studio definitely produce Rochon-esque furniture/accessories and 1stdibs.com is great for antique finds. Also check out onekingslane.com for good deals. And if you haven't already done so, start reading Lonny Magazine online (similar to Domino) because it is a wealth of information (so are design blogs).

Playing Favorites with Ally Horn

Ally is from London, which means that she's got more style in her pinky finger than I've got in my entire body. Even her flat was once owned by veteran designer Matthew Williamson. A woman after my own heart, we email each other fashion finds, ideas, and anecdotes often upwards of 10 times a day. With a home in Los Angeles, Ally is able to pop into Covet LA a few times a season and those visits are always the highlight of my day.

Upon reading my blog, shopping at my boutique, and getting to know my lifestyle, they quickly identified that I should write about fashion as it relates to travel. As I began meticulously putting together outfits for upcoming Spring 2011 market week in New York, I realized it was the perfect time to get started on a post!

THE BASICS
Knowing that I practically live out of a suitcase, customers and friends often ask me how to pack. Below are four (out of probably hundreds) of my favorite basic suitcase items:

NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring a few things, what would they be? Okay, okay, a hotel is not exactly a deserted island... But these are some things I never want to be without:

A FEW THINGS GOING IN MY SUITCASE:
When I'm packing for market week, I always keep in mind three things:
1) A lot of walking and 12+ hour work days.
2) Easy layers are key, as I must be able to try on samples in showrooms/tradeshows.
3) Individual pieces of my outfit must do double duty and transition from day to night.

Emulating the birds of prey, We Are Owls brings us a sense of mystery and make their presence as alluring as it is chilling – as enchanted as it is haunting. The collection carries us into a fantastical world where the lines of distress and desire are blurred. Like its nearly silent counterpart, We Are Owls has caught us off-guard with a stunning collection of carefully developed printed scarves constructed with the finest of cashmere yarns.

Night Moves: For cousins Ling and Emily Chen, and their close friend Connie Lui, their new venture — a scarf collection called We Are Owls — is the culmination of years of brainstorming. Close friends since they attended Manhattan’s LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, the threesome, each 31, talked about collaborating on an art project throughout high school. “We just never knew what it was,” Emily says. Then came college; armed with degrees from design schools (Fashion Institute of Technology for Emily, Parsons The New School for Design for Connie and Ling), the three went their separate ways at various fashion companies (Ling, the creative mastermind behind the trio’s new line, is the design director of The Breed). But over brunch last year, they hatched the idea for an accessories company, deciding to design and produce vast, whimsical cashmere scarves. The name of the collection stems from the group’s nocturnal habits and work ethic: “While the world sleeps, we are awake,” explains Emily, who handles sales and marketing for the line. “We have our day jobs, like everyone else, but we find ourselves up late at night inspired by the hunger to create art and design.”

And these are not wispy spring neckties. Imagine a swath of cashmere, sourced from the mountains of Mongolia, emblazoned with images of bird flocks, willow branches, even an oversize (and creepily mesmerizing) skeleton. As the designers explained: “Our scarves should not just function as a piece to keep you warm, but should also make a statement, like the perfect jewelry or bag that makes the outfit.”

She is my neighbor (she works at Market boutique next door), fellow Lanvin ballet flats collector (we BBM each other pictures of new pairs), intellectual companion (okay, we just "get" each other), and most nights after closing our respective stores, you can find us dancing to the Justins (Timberlake and Bieber, of course) and laughing until we cry. HATS OFF! How to pack a delicate hat

Unless you plan on a hat box being one of your two allotted carry-on items, learning how to nicely pack a delicate hat is a useful piece of information, especially in the summer months. After a long trial and error period, I've finally figured out the best way to do it:

Step 1) Layer some soft, flat items at the bottom of your suitcase (i.e. jeans).

Step 2) Fill your hat with tissue paper or tightly rolled socks so that the crown is firm.

Step 3) Place the hat, crown up, in the center of your suitcase.

Step 4) If your hat has a rolled rim (as demonstrated in the photo above), fill the rim with a tube-like roll of tissue paper.

Step 5) Begin to layer additional clothing items around the hat to support the rim and crown.

Note: Some straw hats may be rolled up, but there's always a risk of losing the original shape en route...

I have a mild (okay, serious) obsession with Paris-based interior designer/genius, Pierre-Yves Rochon. Every detail is more perfect than the next. After recent stays at two hotels newly redone by PYR, here are my takeaways:

1. Venetian glass mirrors make any space more beautiful and feminine.

2. Incorporate a few nature-inspired fixtures and accessories to bring the outdoors into your indoor spaces.
3. Bronze or gold-leaf accents can be used regardless of your color palette.
4. Wallpaper is still relevant.

5. Orchids are elegant and timeless.

6. What is old is new again.

7. Asian style pieces blend with anything.

8. Pay attention to the little things, like knobs and hinges (and, small doses of lucite can't hurt).

9. Never underestimate the power of a fabulous sconce.

10. Refined does not mean stuffy.

My love for animals knows no bounds... When I was eight, I secretly created an opening in my bedroom window screen so that the neighborhood's feral cat could enter each night for food and cuddling. When I was ten, I convinced my mom to escort me to a homing pigeon breeder after an obviously life changing bird feeding experience in Venice, Italy. When I was sixteen, I converted the upstairs spare bedroom into a kitten fostering center. And when I was twenty-two, I quit my job to take care of my then dying dog full time.

For the past twelve years, the work I've done on behalf of animal welfare has been fulfilling beyond words. I've had the honor of getting to know some incredible organizations and individuals along the way, including the woman behind Animal Fair, Wendy Diamond. Wendy recently wrote an article for The Huffington Post (here) outlining ways in which we can all help the current wildlife relief efforts on the Gulf Coast.

And now through July 21st, 10% of total store sales will be donated to the National Wildlife Federation's Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund. TAKING in the parade of patterns at the spring fashion shows was like watching seven rival marching bands converge at a four-way intersection — talk about your clash of symbols. A gal could get carried away by the devil-take-the-hindmost attitude. Does anything and everything go? Can you really wear polka dots with paisley? Can an exotic ikat waltz with a chintzy floral? Will you look like the belle of the ball — or on your way to Bellevue?

Herewith, some guidelines. Not rules, just suggestions worth a try. And as soon you can remember them all, they can be forgotten.

1. Vary the scale. Mix a small neat print with a splashier one. Or an eye-popper with one that’s more neutral.

2. Stay within the same color family.

3. Mix up the fabrics, the weights — a rough-textured fabric with a more refined one. Somehow a nubby, slubby fabric pairs up more naturally with a flat weave than do two smooth-textured fabrics.

4. Toss in some polka dots, stripes or even leopard prints, which are easier to mix with other patterns because they’re simple and graphic. And they’re familiar to the eye.

5. Consider the accessories. Though it’s fun to tote a print bag with a print frock, you can tone down the brights with a great tan leather bag or pair of sandals. Straw works, too.

Located behind the ever popular Market, I was intrigued by the red and white Moroccan type signage and popped in for a visit. My quick pop-in has NOW become a regular pit stop during my weekly travels. Unlike most of the westside shops, which feel cluttered and overwhelming, Covet is crisp and organized. The clothing items in Covet promise a look that is “French Riviera,” industrial and just plain chic. The store owner, Courtney Stroum Meagher, has a true point of view and an instinct about all things design. Although her shop is a clothing boutique for fashionistas like myself, it is clear that Courtney is world traveled, well read, and well versed on all topics lifestyle. Carrying designers such as Smythe, Lutz and Patmos, Current Elliott and Nation T-shirts- Covet is like your statement clutch purse which holds the perfectly chosen lipstick, the necessary credit card, house key, and the newest of cell phones. Courtney discovered her love of fashion as a young girl when she would travel to Europe with her mother and explore textile shops and fashion houses. With a deep knowledge of the backgrounds of the designers she carries, Courtney makes shopping at Covet an experience and not a transaction. By the way, the impossible to locate Smythe Army jacket with the gold button detail was available at Covet until I bought the last one.

Loeffler Randall Spring 2010 Inspiration

Prior to fall and spring markets, Loeffler Randall mails out a small packet to buyers. Using both words and photographs, the inspiration behind the upcoming season is explained. Good collections always tell a story, but few designers take the time to share it the way Jessie Randall does.

"The season began with a happy palette evoking the optimism of spring and led to the creation of a collection grounded in sophisticated neutral solids with pops of bright, vibrant color.

Print takes center stage this season - specifically the ideas of mixing prints together, using print in unexpected places, and manipulating printed raw materials to distort print. I was inspired by tangled rope sculptures and paintings by the artist Arturo Herrera. These ideas were incorporated into the collection through elements like printed spaghetti fabric draped on the bodice of the Spaghetti Dress and printed leather made into spaghetti straps on the Carlie Mignon Twist Sandal. Lacing details appear on boots, high heels, and even bathing suits.

There is a strong tribal theme in the collection inspired by Native American prints and woven designs. The pattern of a woven fabric design is replicated with pieced patent leather on the Idris Navajo Sandal and the Anna Platform features a luxurious woven leather panel.

The shapes and silhouettes of this collection reference early 90's dressing in a modern way, from short lace-up booties to easy blazers with printed rolled cuffs to linen jumpsuits and a lux motorcycle jacket done in soft washed double satin." -Jessie Randall

“Grown-up” clothes are the talk of the runways in these nose-to-the-grindstone times. They’re what’s next for Minnie Mortimer, too—though in the spirit of a good time, she’s not one to take maturation lying down. “I really think that the clothes reflect that my own life is changing,” the designer said at home in L.A. “I’m just straddling that time in my life when I’m still a young girl who wants to go out, and yet I’m being dragged into adulthood. My wardrobe has to keep up with that.” Girls just want to have fun, in other words. Well, there are still Mortimer’s preppy shirtdresses for that, but for Fall, she’s added more tailored daywear and a few elegant matte silk blouses with Victorian details to the mix. (Suiting separates shown with tiny bloomer shorts should dispel any fears that she’s getting gray before her time.) “I’m starting to develop some new fabrics, and I’ve been drawing new prints and colors that I am going to incorporate into my new designs,” she continued. “Just learning how to design and print my own fabrics has been such an amazing process for me. IT GIRL: MINNIE MORTIMER

Minnie Mortimer is one of those girls you’d love to hate but simply can’t. With a beautiful seven-month-old daughter named Tuesday, an Oscar-winning-screenwriter husband named Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), a figure that looks like it was sculpted by Tracey Anderson, and a newly launched, reasonably priced eponymous line that turns out instant sensations that make even the most jaded fashion editors giddy, Minnie is at the top of her game—but she would never let you know it.

Raised in Manhattan, Palm Beach, and Southampton, Mortimer’s favorite designers are Stacey Bendet and Alber Elbaz because “he understands how I dream of looking.” Her own line of sundresses, piped button-downs, and flirty shirtdresses that were inspired by “ruffles, frills, and femininity” launched last spring and instantly became every cool society girl’s most coveted summer cover-up. Minnie’s nautical navy-and-white striped cotton dress hit the Vogue office this August with the same ferocity as the Louboutin over-the-knee boot and a preoccupation with pop-up shops—it was hard to go to the copy machine without spying one peeking out from under a boyfriend blazer.

“Growing up, I had to wear a uniform to school and when I was finally able to choose how I dressed, I appreciated the freedom to express myself through my style. I think a lot of the girls that I grew up with feel that same way,” says Mortimer. When she is not working or spending time with her family, she is drawing, surfing, or practicing yoga. “My husband taught me to surf a few years ago, and I just can’t get enough of it; all of our vacations are surfcentric.”

What will Minnie wear this fall as she jets between New York and Malibu? Chloé’s suede flat over-the-knee boot, Opening Ceremony’s romper made from men’s suiting, Alexander Wang minidresses for parties, and her Chiara blouse (its high ruffled neck is very Big Love meets Elizabethan reign) and a Peter shrunken boy blazer.

“In Malibu I am always just out of the water or about to head into it, which makes my style pretty laid-back,” she says. “In New York I am much more buttoned up.” What’s on her wish list? “I can’t wait to get my hands on the Charlotte Ronson poufy-shouldered leather jacket.” We can’t wait to get our hands on the next Minnie Mortimer.

I consider myself to be an expert traveler. My friends and customers always ask me what my airplane essentials are, and since I'm packing for a flight as we speak, I figured I would jot down my top 10 must-haves:

1) BOSE QuietComfort 15 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Reduces noises (like crying babies and engines) and provides surround sound-like acoustics when watching TV or movies.

2) Longchamp "Le Pliage" Expandable Carry-On
Durable, understated, and has an optional shoulder strap.
3) Sanitizing Wipes
The first thing I do when I get on an airplane is wipe down the area around me, like the arm rests, screen, and table top.

4) Passport & Travel Document Holder

Keeps me organized so that important things don't go missing in the black hole that is my bag.

Because I do most of my reading on airplanes, I bring a little envelope with me to safely store any pages from magazines or newspapers that I wish to keep.

Organization is my middle name, and I would be nothing without my ability to create and maintain immaculate to-do lists (among other kinds of lists, such as wines I like, books I want to read, and small towns in South Carolina I want to visit- yes, there's a list for that, too). These notebooks are the best. Period.
9) iPod Shuffle
So tiny, I clip it to my shirt and fall asleep to music.

10) Mini Lint Roller

Because, really, who wants to be covered in lint?

Dear Blogosphere (is that what I call it...?!),

This is my first blog entry, and there are oh-so-many things I can, and will, write about... First, some things you should know about COVET Los Angeles and the person behind it:

1) I believe that what you wear and how you wear it should not rule your life, it should enhance it.

2) I strongly recommend a neutral palette as the foundation to any woman's wardrobe. One foot inside my store, and that will be obvious.

3) Quality, for me, is essential. I buy on a scale of good, better, best, so that my selection can accommodate a variety of budgets.

4) Garment care is crucial, and I can talk for hours about the delicate cycle on a washing machine, and all related matters.
